A Brief History of Pride Month

June 2022 marks the 52nd celebration of Pride Month, a time when LGBT+ communities around the world come together and celebrate love, diversity, acceptance, and the freedom to be oneself. The adoption of pride as a guiding attitude is intended to counteract the shame and social stigma that LGBT individuals continue to face to this day.

So, why does Pride Month take place in June?

It all started in the early morning hours of Saturday, 28 June, 1969, in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Following a violent police raid targeting individuals engaging in the then-illegal practice of cross-dressing at the Stonewall Inn, a popular Christopher St. gay bar, patrons of the Stonewall and other neighboring gay bars took to the streets in riot, amassing an enormous crowd as they went. The riot and a series of spontaneous protests by members of New York City’s gay community that ensued over the next six days, known today as the Stonewall riots, are widely considered to be the watershed event that initiated the gay liberation movement and the fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

Today, Pride Month events are celebrated worldwide by anyone whose gender identity or sexual identity falls outside the mainstream, as well as by straight and cisgender people who support the LGBT civil rights cause. Event formats include parades, marches, parties, concerts, workshops, symposiums, and memorials for members of the LGBT community who have lost their lives to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.

Christopher Street Day Events in Germany

In Germany, Pride Month events are referred to as Christopher Street Day (CSD) events, in commemoration of the riots that gave birth to the modern LGBT rights movement. Here’s a complete list of CSD events happening around the BUNTESland this summer.
